DAKAR (SEN) - Nice African evening (23 degrees), some 50 000 spectators, four meet records (men 800m, long jump, women 400 m, hammer), one world lead (men 3000 m). That was the second leg of new IAAF World Challenge, one of the two in Africa. Worth of the time of the year for top athletes and worth of economical (and travelling) possibilities. Both world champions were clear winners. Popular singer Youssou Ndour ended the evening with a performance.

Events reviews

MEN

2010-winners-Shot-put100 m: Sub 10 Jamaican runner Lerone Clarke was the clear winner in one of the fastest legal times in the history of the meet 10.19 (+0.8). Americans followed, US Josh Norman second 10.32 and another Jamaican Ainsley Waugh third 10.39. After that Africans Obinna Metu of Nigeria (10.41) and SA Champion Simon Magakwe (10.45).

200 m: Here the picture changed, Africans ruled. Ben Meite of Ivory Coast won in 20.86 (+2.2) and surprisingly beat world leader Simon Magakwe (21.08). Third best American sprinter Jamaican Ainsley Waugh (21.28).

400 m: Wind from begin did not allow fast times. African record holder Gary Kikaya of Congo beat in 46.90 the current SA gold medalist Ofentse Mogawane (47.10).

800 m: After 51.69 split world champion Mbulaeni Mulaudzi controlled the fast last 100 meters. His final 1:46.15 is new meet record (previous 1:46.85 by Abraham Chepkirwok in 2007). Mulaudzi was pleased after the race and said he is not planning moving to 1500 m. Second Briton Michael Rimmer very useful for April 1:46.29, third Kenyan Richard Kiplagat 1:46.36 and under 1:47 also fourth another Kenyan Geoffrey Rono 1:46.43.

3000 m: It looked like favorite Tariku Bekele will prevail but in last 50 meters Suleiman Simotwo of Kenya was faster and achieved world leading 7:45.15. Bekele was second in 7:45.81, third Ugandan steeple record holder Benjamin Kiplagat 7:46.50. Still two more under 7:50. Fourth Mark Kiptoo (7:47.05) and fifth Abraham Chebii (7:48.50). Splits 2:36 and 5:14.

400 m Hurdles: SA Champion Cornel Fredericks confirms his good shape with 49.33 win. Second Beijing finalist Markino Buckley of Jamaica (49.75).

High Jump: African champion Kabelo Kgosiemang cleared 226 in third and as clear winner passed 229 and tried three times at 230. US Olympic fourth placer from 2004 Jamie Nieto went over 223 and was second. Other world class names did not master 223. Russian Andrey Tereshin only 219 (5th), US Dusty Jonas also 219 (3rd tie) with Sudanese Ali Mohd Younes Idriss for him new national record the 219.

Long Jump: Another top event of the evening. Home best athlete Ndiss Kaba Badji already in first jump leaped to 827 (+0.7), new meet record (former Egyptian Hatem 826 back in 1999) . And confirmed that mark with windy 822 (+5.4). Here only four rounds were staged. Second Ukrainian Oleksandr Soldatkin surprised with life-time best 812 (+1.0, never before outdoors had 8+). Algerian record holder Issan Nima was third (812,+2.4). Chris Tomlinson of Great Britain as fourth achieved windy 805 (+3.7) and legal 798 (+2.0). Also to note fifth Ignisious Gaisah of Ghana with windy 801 (+5.7) and legal 792 (+1.4). Five over 8 meters even with wind is very good.

WOMEN

100 m: Commonwealth gold medalist Sheri-Ann Brooks ruled here clearly with 11.33 (+2.4). Second placed Briton Joice Maduaka posted 11.64.

200 m: Double for Brooks, this time legal 23.27 (+0.7). Solid fight behind her with some quartermilers who already had their race. Second Natalie Knight of US (23.76), third Maduaka (23.82), fourth Bahamian Christine Amertil (23.82) and fifth Monica Hargrove (23.84).

400 m: Excellent meet record and confirmation of great early shape of African Champ and world indoor finalist Amantle Montsho of Botswana. Her 50.94 is new meet record, former was her own 51.00 from 2008. Second US Hargrove 52.73 and third Amertil 52.74.

800 m: Here some good names, but slow pace. Malika Akkaoui of Morocco (2:02 level from last year) won in 2:10.66 over olympic 1500 gold medalist Nancy Lagat (2:10.71) and more experienced another Moroccan Seltana Ait Hammou (2:10.93).

400 m Hurdles: Jamaican 2007 world 4th placer Nickiesha Wilson fulfilled her favorite role in 57.82 over US Dominque Darden 58.16.

Long Jump: US Funmi Jimoh was the best on paper and confirmed that with windy 687 (+5.0) but good legal 664 (+1.2). Brianna Glenn was second making it a US double (658, +4.7) and third South African Janice Josephs (639, +4.1).

Hammer Throw: Best women event in depth, also start of IAAF Hammer Throw Challenge. World champion Anita Wlodarczyk achieved already in first throw 73.29 and that would be enough for win. In third round she undermined her lead with 75.13 what is African All-Comers record, of course meet record, third best mark of the year. It is also her 9th best mark of the career. In first meet since her world record throw and injury in Berlin. Marina Marghieva of Moldova came close to her national record (72.53) with 72.14 and was second. Third former world record holder Tatyana Lysenko of Russia (70.03). Italian Clarissa Claretti good fourth 69.20. In the new challenge top three marks of each athlete are counting, no points. That means Wlodarczyk leads in the challenge with 75.13. Next women competition is in Daegu on May 19 and Wlodarczyk should be there again.

General information (Geography)

38500_w600xh400

Dakar is the capital city of Senegal, located on the Cap-Vert Peninsula, on the country's Atlantic coast. It is Senegal's largest city. Its position, on the western edge of Africa (it is the westernmost city on the African mainland), is an advantageous departure point for trans-Atlantic and European trade; this fact aided its growth into a major regional port. According to December 31, 2005 official estimates, the city of Dakar proper has a population of 1,030,594, whereas the population of the Dakar metropolitan area is estimated at 2.45 million people.[3]

Dakar is a major administrative centre, home to the National Assembly of Senegal and Senegal Presidential Palace. Dakar has a hot semi-arid climate (Köppen climate classification BSh), with a short rainy season and a lengthy dry season. Dakar's rainy season lasts from July to October while the dry season covers the remaining eight months. The city sees approximately 540 mm of precipitation per year.

Dakar between December and April is usually pleasantly warm. Nights during this time of the year are comfortable. Between May and November, the city becomes decidedly warmer.
